"So, our message today is simple: If you are eligible for the Child Tax Credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit, we want you to get those credits. And you know why: Working families deserve a break," Vice President Kamala Harris said in a press conference on Tuesday.
Over the past two years, several significant tax credits have been passed or enhanced that are designed to help families overcome some of the struggles of the COVID-19 pandemic, changing employment situations, and an inflationary economy.
The White House highlighted several tax credits that were included in bills passed by Congress.
The Child Tax Credit was increased from $2000 to $3600 for children under six years of age and $3000 for children 6 to 17 years old.
The Earned Income Tax Credit (EIC) has increased from $540 to $1500 for 17 million workers. Many younger workers (19-24) and over 65 years of age are now eligible for the EIC.
The federal government has created a website, www.ChildTaxCredit.gov. The site is designed to help taxpayers calculate their child tax credits under the new laws. The website also offers free assisted filing of taxes so all taxpayers can file in a timely manner.
Many non-profit and faith-based organizations in the country are offering tax preparation assistance for families to ensure they complete their taxes in a timely fashion and get all credits they're entitled.
Several for-profit tax preparation companies have begun advertising to prepare taxes for families free of charge, as long as they are "simple" taxes only.
Taxes are due to be filed by Monday, April 18. Extensions, if needed, must be filed by that time as well.
