Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKCTC) officially opened its doors to its sixth location this week. This new facility offers new educational opportunities for the people of Knox County and beyond.
On Wednesday, October 12, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the new Southeast Knox Campus on Shelby Street in downtown Barbourville.
“Today is a dream come true,” said Becky Miller with KCEOC Community Action Partnership. “For the people who wanted to increase their skills but feared they didn’t have the transportation to participate in training,” She continued, “For the people who know they are skilled but not certified, today is a dream come true. For the employers who wanted to serve the needs of their community with quality employees, today is a dream come true.”
The campus offers programs in computerized machine manufacturing, welding, medical assisting, criminal justice, and plumbing, among many others, as well as a wide range of scholarships, grants, and loans to make getting an education affordable.
“This campus will produce graduates that can help fill major gaps in the workforce,” said Congressman Hal Rogers. “They’ll have no trouble finding a job.” He continued, “I’m convinced if we invest in this generation, our best and brightest students will graduate from Southeast, and we can transform the community.” He added, “This is a major step for Knox County and don’t sell yourself short. You’ve turned a big corner with the opening of this facility.”
Congressman Rogers, State Representative Tom Smith, Representatives for Senior Senator Mitch McConnell and Senate President Robert Stivers, SKCTC President/CEO Vic Adams, Knox County elected officials, and KCEOC President Paul Dole, among many other community leaders and educators, attended the ceremony.
SKCTC offers 6–8-week classes in a traditional classroom setting or distance learning (online courses), as well as day or evening classes to fit any busy schedule.
