Theft suspect assaults deputies during arrest in Laurel County

According to Laurel County Sheriff‘s Office, an East Bernstadt man was arrested on Monday after he allegedly stole a Dodge Caravan and assaulted deputies.

Laurel Sheriff's Deputy Allen Turner, Deputy Jamie Etherton, Deputy Brent France, and Detective Bryon Lawson were dispatched on Somerset Road just 4 miles west of London. They received a complaint that a transport van had been stolen off Glenview Road.

Deputies were able to locate the reported stolen vehicle three miles from where it had been stolen. A male suspect was located driving the silver Dodge Caravan.

Upon arrest, the driver reportedly started violently fighting, kicking, and punching deputies there. One deputy received injuries to his leg from the suspect’s “repeated violent kicking.”

Deputies were finally able to take Cody Marcum, 25, of East Bernstadt, into custody.

Marcum was charged with four counts of Assault - Third Degree (Police Officer); Theft by Unlawful Taking – Auto – $10,000 or more but under $1 million; Public Intoxication – Controlled Substances; Resisting Arrest; Fleeing or Evading Police – Second Degree (On Foot) and was lodged into the Laurel County Correctional Center.
