The Corbin Lady Redhounds were coming in as the district runner-up, which meant they had to go through North Laurel and South Laurel to win the 13th Region Tournament. They did just that with an excited 43-41 overtime victory over the Lady Cardinals on Saturday, March 5.
Corbin got off to a slow start as the Defending 13th Region Champs, South Laurel, jumped out to an 11-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. Rachel Presley poured in nine points in the first half for the Lady Cardinals. She went on to finish with 20 points and four blocked shots.
Corbin got going in the second quarter as they outscored South Laurel 18-8 to take a 22-19 edge at the half. Kallie Housley knocked down three three-pointers in the first half of play. The sensational sophomore finished with 16 points, including four three-pointers. She was also named the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament.
The third quarter was back and forth, with South Laurel outscoring Corbin 10-9 to close the gap at 31-29. The fourth quarter was all defense as the Lady Cardinals scored four points and the Lady Redhounds only scored two points.
Darcie Anderson and Shelby Stewart stepped up for the Lady Redhounds as both players finished with 11 points. Anderson also dished out four assists on the night.
South Laurel 7th-grader Skeeter Mabe turned in a solid performance as she finished with 10 points on the night. She made several big plays down the stretch, but it wasn’t enough as Corbin managed to come out on top.
Corbin's Raegan Walker found herself with the ball in her hands as time was running down. She drove to her right and weaved around a couple of defenders before scooping up the game-winner with 7 seconds left on the clock.
